Scientists from University Henri Poincare-Nancy & Georgetown U. Medical Center, etc., pondered whether milk really has a calming effect. "According to folk wisdom, milk intake improves sleeping or has a calming role, a belief supported by some scientific studies," they wrote.

They wondered about that. If it is true, there must be a biochemical rationale. They gathered a group of ten medical scientists to find out.

They discovered that a casein (milk protein) constituent mimics the action of anxiety-reducing drugs - but--"....it does not trigger any side effects." (emphasis added.)
