Prostate
Cancer
A warning has been signaled, in effect, for prostate cancer patients in a
new report by Drs. Morris, Williams, et al., Dept. of Chemistry &
Biochemistry, Old Dominion U., Norfolk, VA 23539. They have revealed*
that, although a class of substances called stilbenes 'which include the
anti-breast cancer drug tamoxifen] destroy breast cancer cells, they have
"demonstrated a protective
effect on prostate cancer cells." That is, they
protect these cancer cells. They note that the widely heralded ingredient
in grapes and wine, resveratrol, is a stilbene.
DETAILS: This substance is sold separately in pill and capsule form by
health food stores and mail order vitamin distributors. The degree of risk
would be expected to be increased for prostate cancer patients if taken in
this concentrated form rather than by eating grapes.
*As reported at the FASEB conference on Biochemistry & Molecular
Biology '99.
