Soy Extract and Bone Loss
The study above was abstracted from a physician-based service, giving them
credits toward their Continuing Medical Education requirements. These
Hormone Replacement Drugs are what are featured in medical education there
and elsewhere. Still, for those who search them out there are studies of
food-based alternatives for menopausal women.
One such report was from the journal Calif Tissue Int., vol. 69, 2001,
which revealed that of women who have had their ovaries removed and given
Ipriflavone, a soy bean derivative within 3 months of the surgery there
was a 6.7% decrease in bone mineral density compared to a placebo group's
10.7% decrease. The women who had their operations or had undergone
menopause more than 3 years before taking Ipriflavone had no comparable
improvement.
