Surprise! Exercisers Should Reduce Protein, Report Shows

Researchers at Virginia Polytechnic and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24601-0606  and at Hebrew U., Rehovot, Isreal,* found that by testing varying amounts of protein in the diets of horses, while some protein is required, most are fed at too high a level.

"Heat production from higher levels of protein may interfere with exercise.... 'by increasing acidity as protein is acidic,] and increasing acidity will interfere with 'glucose breakdown] and muscle fiber contraction," they note.

"Restriction of dietary protein may be beneficial during strenuous exercise by diminishing production of heat and acid, " they added.

*In The Journal of Nutrition, vol. 131, 2001.
