A Food with
Anti-Cancer Properties
Many, many reports have been issued in the
scientific literature about this marvelous food substance that has been shown to have an
anti-cancer effect.
The popular media haven't discovered it
yet, but eventually they will. Shouldn't you know now?
Okay! It's CLA (conjugated linoleic acid,)
and it's found especially in milk products particularly in processed cheese, like parmesan
and romano. So, please pass me the pizza!
Wonder why TV and the newspapers would
not be
excited by a scientific report which in l997 was entitled, "Protection against cancer
and heart disease by the dietary fat, conjugated linoleic acid..." ? Well, since its
not a drug, why should they bother, huh?
If you or someone you know
is being treated for cancer, you might ask the physician if you may add
CLA (which is also available in pill form--see Vitamins section, via Home
Page) to your regimen. This is not a harmful substance, apparently.
The original study was by Ph.D.'s Belury
and Venden Heuvel,* and now the latter, in the Journal of Nutrition** expands on their
work by discovering a different beneficial pathway of CLA's action. It works essentially
by causing the reduction of factors that would aid the growth of tumor cells. Earlier, Dr.
Vendel Heuvel and his co-workers had shown its effect in liver cancer. Now he shows that
it may have wider use. He concludes, "(This explains) why certain polyunsaturated
(fats, and he mentions fish oils,) have a beneficial health effect and may also point to
future means of intervention in cancer therapy." Since it can't hurt, why not try it
as an add-on to chemotherapy now?
